Why Bwindi Is Special

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — 20–22+ habituated gorilla families — is the largest home of mountain gorillas in Africa. Located in southwestern Uganda, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its ancient rainforest ecosystem, rare wildlife, and life-changing gorilla trekking experiences. The forest dates back over 25,000 years and shelters hundreds of plant, bird, and mammal species.

The park is divided into four main trekking sectors, each with habituated gorilla families you can visit:

1) Buhoma Sector — Northern Bwindi

Is Bwindi safe to visit?

Yes. Bwindi is well protected by Uganda Wildlife Authority and professional ranger teams. Visitors are escorted at all times during trekking activities.

How many people trek gorillas per day?

Each gorilla family is visited by a maximum of 8 people per day to protect the animals and environment.

Do I need special equipment for trekking?

Waterproof hiking boots, long sleeves, and a rain jacket are recommended. Walking sticks can be rented at park headquarters.
